The Ministry of Education has announced plans to constitute a technical team to undertake a comprehensive review of the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS). The decision aims to ensure greater transparency, efficiency, and fairness in the placement of students into second-cycle institutions across the country.
*Annual Complaints Prompt Review*
The review comes on the back of annual complaints over placements into senior high schools. This year, resolution centers were established in regions to cater to complaints from parents, guardians, and students. Officials reported 9,000 cases as of September 24, 2025, with the Greater Accra center recording the highest number of 4,000 complaints.
*Key Challenges with the Current System*
– *Limited spaces in top schools*: Category ‘A’ schools have been filled up, making it difficult for students to change schools.
– *Inflexible placement policy*: Candidates can only be changed under circumstances of health grounds or relocation.
– *High demand for top schools*: About 76% of candidates requested a change from categories ‘B’ and ‘C’ to Category ‘A’ schools.
*Minister’s Assurance*
Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, emphasized that the review would engage key stakeholders, including education managers and representatives of parents and students. He reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to improving educational infrastructure, teaching resources, and administrative systems.
*Placement Statistics*
– *483,800 candidates placed*: Into SHSs and technical institutions on September 17, 2025.
– *536,292 total placements*: Including 52,492 self-placements into second-cycle schools under the CSSPS.
– *590,309 qualified candidates*: Out of 603,328 students who sat the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) qualified for placement into second-cycle institutions.
