Western Regional Task Force Arrests 12 Illegal Miners

The Western Regional Anti-Galamsey Task Force has arrested 12 illegal miners, including a woman, for destroying rubber plantations at Adiewoso and Tettrem in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality.

During the operation, the team seized two tricycles and a motorbike and destroyed 25 Chanfang machines.

Brigadier General Musa Whajah (rtd), Western Regional National Security Liaison Officer, who led the task force, said the raid followed a complaint from the Ghana Rubber Estate Limited (GREL) about declining output. He explained that the miners’ use of harmful chemicals had led to the uprooting of trees, the death of nurseries, and reduced yields.

He revealed that over six hectares of rubber plantation had already been damaged, with about 2,000 trees destroyed.

Brig. Gen. Whajah said:

“Following the devastation of cocoa farms, rubber plantations have become the latest target for illegal miners, and their activities are destroying these rubber plantations, causing significant production losses due to chemical contamination and water pollution.”

He emphasized that the task force would continue its crackdown, stating that the company could not afford to collapse due to reduced production. He also encouraged GREL to collaborate more closely with local communities.

“The company must prioritise comprehensive community engagement and provide alternative livelihood options for local residents so that they will move away from the lure of quick gains from illegal mining,” he added.

Meanwhile, the 12 suspects and the seized items are in custody at the Agona Nkwanta Police Station as investigations continue.
