BoG Urges Media To Ensure Accuracy In Financial Reports

The media has been urged to uphold accuracy and responsibility when reporting on financial and economic issues in the country. This call was made by the Director of Communications at the Bank of Ghana, Mr. Bernard Otabil, at the closing ceremony of a three-day capacity-building workshop for journalists in Winneba, Central Region.

The programme, organised by the Bank of Ghana, brought together media practitioners from various outlets to strengthen their understanding of financial concepts, monetary policy, and the regulatory mandate of the central bank.

Mr. Otabil stressed that accurate financial reporting is critical not only for market stability but also for public trust in financial institutions. He cautioned that misinformation or misinterpretation of data could have far-reaching consequences for investor confidence and economic planning.

“The media plays a critical role in shaping public understanding of financial issues. It is, therefore, important that journalists are not only informed but also guided by facts and context when reporting. This workshop is part of our commitment to fostering that accuracy,” he said.

Daily Graphic’s Central Region correspondent, Mrs. Shally Asiedo Addo, who took part in the training, welcomed the initiative and called for more of such engagements.

“This has been an insightful experience. I believe other institutions should adopt similar approaches. Press releases are useful, but they often don’t provide the full picture. The media is general, and it is up to institutions to help us understand their regulatory roles and mandates,” she remarked.

The workshop featured sessions on inflation targeting, banking supervision, exchange rate management, and the role of the media in promoting financial literacy.

Certificates were awarded to participants, with the Bank of Ghana pledging to roll out similar workshops across the regions to deepen transparency, accountability, and accurate financial reporting nationwide
