The Cape Coast Metropolitan Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Mr. Joseph Abban, has questioned the growing trend of basic schools in the metropolis no longer flying the Ghana national flag on their premises.
Mr. Abban said he does not understand the reason heads of basic schools have abandoned the practice, describing it as a worrying development that could undermine efforts to instill patriotism in pupils at an early age.
He made this known during an interview on the Morning Mix programme on Coastal Television, hosted by Omar Bin Abdullah. Coastal Television was adjudged Best Media House of the Year at the 6th edition of the Osabarimba Royal Awards 2026.
According to Mr. Abban, the Ghana flag is a key national symbol that promotes unity, discipline and respect for the nation, particularly among schoolchildren. He stressed that regular exposure to the flag helps shape the civic attitudes of pupils and strengthens their sense of national identity.
He therefore called on heads of basic schools to take the lead in restoring the practice of hoisting the national flag on school grounds, noting that it remains an important civic responsibility.
Mr. Abban added that the NCCE will continue to engage school authorities and intensify civic education to ensure that respect for national symbols is upheld across the metropolis.
