Cape Coast DSTV Subscribers Support Government’s Call for Price Reduction

Some DSTV subscribers in the Cape Coast Metropolis have expressed strong support for the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation’s directive for MultiChoice Ghana to reduce subscription prices.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, subscribers praised Mr. Samuel Nartey George, the sector minister, for taking decisive action to address what they described as “unaffordable” and “unfair” high fees.

Many urged the government to break DSTV’s monopoly to tackle pricing and affordability challenges.

Subscribers noted that DSTV fees in Ghana are significantly higher than in neighbouring countries, with some packages costing nearly three times more than in other West African nations.

This comes amid rising complaints that DSTV costs are a heavy financial burden for households.

At a press briefing on August 1, 2025, Mr. Nartey George gave MultiChoice until August 7 to implement a 30 per cent price cut or risk suspension of its broadcasting licence.

The minister highlighted the disparity, saying customers in Ghana pay about US$83 for the premium package compared to US$29 in Nigeria.

MultiChoice responded that such a price cut was untenable given service quality and customer choice concerns.

Despite this, Cape Coast subscribers backed the government’s stance, arguing that a fair price reduction would improve access and ease financial strain.

Mr. Daniel Mensah, a subscriber and manager of Honest Public at Aquarium, said many welcomed the directive, calling the original pricing “too exorbitant.”

Pub owner Mr. Kwesi Mensah complained about rising charges and unreliable service with frequent signal interruptions.

Teacher Mrs. Akosua Ofori said the cost was “just too high,” noting the limited new content.

Subscriber Mr. Samuel Boateng called the constant fee hikes unfair without service improvements.

Many others told GNA they preferred direct price reductions rather than temporary discounts, emphasising fairness amid currency appreciation.

Subscribers urged MultiChoice Ghana to balance business needs with customer welfare by making packages affordable and improving service reliability.
