The Upper Denkyira East Municipal Assembly has announced plans to construct a modern 24-hour market as part of its efforts to implement the government’s national 24-hour economy initiative.
The project will start in October and is expected to finish within six months. Its objectives are to enhance local trade, generate jobs, and promote economic growth in the municipality.
The new market will be situated near the Municipal Circuit Court, adjacent to the central market, to reduce congestion and enhance access to goods and services.
Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. George Anane Coleman, told the Ghana News Agency the market would be a game-changer for local businesses, especially small-scale traders and farmers.
“The 24-hour economy is not a dream; it’s a reality we are preparing for,” he said.
The facility will feature modern amenities, including lighting, sanitation, security, and transportation infrastructure to support 24/7 operations.
It will have designated areas for fresh food, clothing, electronics, night vending, storage, and cold rooms for perishable goods. The market will also be environmentally friendly and accessible to persons with disabilities.
Mr. Coleman stated that the project is part of a broader strategy to stimulate economic activity, reduce unemployment, and control rural-urban migration.
“A functioning 24-hour market means more opportunities for transport operators, food vendors, traders, and security personnel. It’s a win for all,” he noted.
The Assembly has secured full funding through the District Assemblies Common Fund and is finalising contract documents to begin construction.
With this initiative, Upper Denkyira East is positioning itself as a leader in embracing Ghana’s 24-hour economy agenda and setting a model for other districts to follow.
