Tension is rising in Brenu Akyinyim in the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem (KEEA) Municipality of the Central Region, as parents and traditional leaders (Nananom) accuse the headteacher of Brenu Akyinyim M/A Basic School of imposing an unauthorized fee on students ahead of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
According to the aggrieved parents—many of whom are also members of the traditional authority—the headteacher, together with the School Management Committee (SMC) and Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), has allegedly directed that each candidate pay GH¢150.00 to cater for invigilators for the upcoming examination.
The situation has sparked outrage within the community, with the Nananom expressing deep dissatisfaction over what they describe as disrespect and a breakdown in collaboration between school authorities and community leadership. They insist that the current administration has sidelined them in decision-making processes, making it difficult to work together for the progress of the school.
The concerned parents and chiefs are therefore calling on the Ghana Education Service (GES) in the KEEA Municipality to immediately intervene and remove both the headteacher and the assistant headteacher from their posts.
They are also demanding clarity from the GES on whether the GH¢150.00 levy was officially sanctioned, as claimed by the headteacher. According to them, transparency is lacking, and they want authorities to confirm the legitimacy of the charge.
Additionally, the community raised concerns over poor accountability practices at the school. They cited the neglect of an “Acacia Tree” initiative—an internal community support system established to raise funds for school development—as an example of how financial management issues have not been properly addressed.
The residents say they will continue to press for answers until the matter is resolved and accountability is ensured.
