Pupils of Ebubonko MA Basic School in the Ebubonko-Amissano Electoral Area of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly have appealed to opinion leaders, local authorities, parents, and guardians to take communal labour seriously to help keep their community clean and healthy.

The pupils made the appeal while participating in the National Clean-Up Exercise, a nationwide sanitation campaign directed by the President of Ghana. Speaking to Asorbamedia.com, the pupils expressed concern over the poor sanitation situation in their community, especially the indiscriminate dumping of refuse along the roadside near the Methodist Church at Ebubonko.

According to the pupils, the continuous dumping of waste without regular communal labour poses serious health risks to residents. They noted that uncollected refuse attracts flies, mosquitoes, and rodents, which can spread diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and malaria.
They stressed that although children are often encouraged to maintain good hygiene, they are the ones who suffer the consequences when adults neglect their responsibility to keep the environment clean.
“We are pleading with our opinion leaders, authorities, parents, and guardians not to be lazy when it comes to communal labour. If we all work together to clean our surroundings regularly, our community will be healthier and safer for everyone,” some of the pupils said.
The pupils further urged residents to stop dumping refuse at unauthorized locations and instead support efforts to maintain a clean environment. They called on community leaders to organise regular communal labour and educate residents on proper waste disposal.
They expressed hope that their appeal would encourage greater community participation in sanitation activities and help create a cleaner and healthier Ebubonko for both present and future generations.
