Black Stars Edge Mali To Boost 2026 World Cup Hopes

Ghana’s Black Stars secured a vital 1-0 victory over Mali in their 2026 World Cup qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 8, 2026.

The hosts pushed hard for the breakthrough in the opening stages but met a stubborn Malian defense. The deadlock was finally broken when Jordan Ayew’s corner was met at the far post by Alexander Djiku, who calmly slotted home the winning goal.

Mali responded with waves of attacks after conceding, but Ghana’s backline, led by Djiku, Mohammed Salisu, and Yirenkyi, stood firm to keep them at bay.

Late substitutions Kamaldeen Sulemana and Joseph Paintsil injected more pace into Ghana’s attack, yet the Black Stars were unable to add a second despite creating chances.

The win strengthens Ghana’s grip at the top of Group I with 19 points from eight games. Madagascar follow with 16, Comoros sit third with 15, while Mali trail in fourth on 12 points.

The Black Stars now need just one win from their final two qualifiers in October 2025 against the Central African Republic and Comoros to confirm their place at the 2026 World Cup.
