Central Region Journalists Undergo Training On Financial Reporting

A cross-section of journalists from various media houses in the Central Region have converged in Winneba for a three-day capacity-building workshop organised by the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

The training began on Thursday to enhance journalists’ financial reporting skills and deepen their understanding of the central bank’s regulatory role.

The opening ceremony featured strong calls from key stakeholders for journalists to embrace the opportunity to sharpen their skills. Central Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Kingsley Nana Buadu, urged participants to take full advantage of the programme.

“This is a rare opportunity. Let us take full advantage of it to upgrade ourselves. Understanding financial concepts is crucial in holding institutions accountable and informing the public accurately,” Mr. Buadu said.

The Director of Communications at the Bank of Ghana, Mr. Bernard Otabil, addressed the participants and emphasized the significance of responsible financial reporting. He explained that the central bank’s engagement with the media is part of a larger effort to enhance communication between financial institutions and the public.

“After this three-day workshop, we expect every journalist here to have a clearer grasp of financial issues and to report with precision and clarity. The media plays a critical role in shaping public perception, and we want to ensure that the information out there is factual and well-contextualized,” Mr. Otabil noted.

The training program encompasses a broad array of topics, such as monetary policy, inflation targeting, banking regulations, and financial stability. Participants will engage in interactive sessions and simulations to enhance their understanding of how to interpret and present complex financial data.

The workshop, which runs until Saturday, features resource persons from different departments of the Bank of Ghana as well as experienced financial journalists. It is expected to enhance the quality of financial journalism in the region and improve public understanding of key economic issues.
