The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly, Hon. George Justice Arthur, has expressed concern over what he described as the lack of commitment by some residents toward maintaining a clean environment in the metropolis.

Speaking during a sanitation exercise, Hon. Arthur noted that although some residents actively participate in cleanup activities, many others show little or no interest in keeping their surroundings clean. According to him, this situation cannot continue, as environmental cleanliness is critical to public health and development.

He emphasized that the Assembly will intensify efforts to ensure full participation in sanitation activities in the coming year, stressing that enforcement of sanitation laws will be a top priority.

“Enforcement of the law is very necessary going forward,” Hon. Arthur stated. “We are going to make sure that the laws are respected, and no one will be allowed to go scot-free.”

In a major announcement made through the video address, the MCE revealed that the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly plans to establish a Sanitation Court in 2026. The court will be responsible for prosecuting individuals who deliberately refuse to take part in mandatory cleanup exercises or violate sanitation regulations.

He explained that the sanitation court will be properly structured, with lawyers and judges assigned to handle sanitation-related cases. Persons found culpable will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

“This sanitation court will ensure discipline and responsibility,” he said. “When one is found guilty, that person will be prosecuted. We are serious about sanitation.”

Hon. Arthur also indicated that the current exercise marks the last sanitation activity for the year 2025, adding that stronger measures will be rolled out in subsequent years to ensure a cleaner Cape Coast.

He concluded by calling on residents to cooperate with the Assembly and take collective responsibility for keeping the metropolis clean, stressing that sanitation is a shared duty.
