A 21-year-old unemployed man and former convict, Sampson Asiedu, has been sentenced to four years imprisonment by the Nsuta Circuit Court in the Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region for stealing two mobile phones belonging to a road accident victim.

The court, presided over by His Lordship Simon Nketiah Gagah, handed down the sentence on Monday, June 22, 2026, after Asiedu pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing.

In addition to the prison term, the court ordered the convict to pay GH¢5,000, representing the value of the stolen phones. Failure to pay the amount will result in an additional two-year jail term.

Presenting the facts of the case, Chief Inspector Charles Vitarshie told the court that the complainant, Francis Agyekum Marfo, is a military officer stationed in Accra.

According to the prosecution, on May 2, 2026, Mr. Marfo was travelling with his family to Effiduase while on leave when they were involved in a road accident on the Juaben–Effiduase road. Several family members, including the complainant, sustained injuries and were rushed to the Divine Grace Medical Centre for medical attention.

The court heard that following the accident, Asiedu and another individual arrived at the scene and assisted in transporting the injured victims to the hospital. However, during the rescue effort, Asiedu allegedly took advantage of the situation and stole two mobile phones belonging to the complainant.

While receiving treatment, Mr. Marfo discovered that the phones were missing and immediately attempted to trace them. The prosecution said he called one of the phone numbers, and Asiedu answered, admitting that the devices were in his possession and promising to return them.

Despite the assurance, the accused failed to return the phones. Subsequent attempts by the complainant to reach the devices were unsuccessful as both phones had been switched off.

Following investigations and his eventual arrest, Asiedu was arraigned before the court, where he pleaded guilty and was subsequently convicted and sentenced.
