Two Arrested Over Homowo Festival Shooting in Accra

Two men, Christian Saka Ahianyevi, 35, a security guard, and Newtown Allotey, 26, a dispatch rider, have appeared before the Adabraka District Court following their arrest over a deadly shooting during the Homowo Festival at Omanjor in Accra.

The accused face charges including conspiracy to commit crime to wit murder, rioting with weapons, and murder. They allegedly acted with a group of 30 others who are still at large.

Presiding over the case, Mrs. Abena Owusu Omenyo did not take their pleas due to the seriousness of the murder charges and remanded them into custody to reappear on September 29, 2025. Chief Inspector Apeweh Achana, leading the prosecution, said investigations were ongoing and police were making urgent efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects.

According to the police, the incident occurred on August 30, 2025, during the annual Homowo Festival celebrated by the chief and people of Omanjor and surrounding communities. While the festival procession was ongoing, the accused and their accomplices allegedly blocked the route near the “Police land” area, claiming the chief and his people had trespassed on their property. A confrontation ensued, which escalated into gunfire.

Three people — Abubakar Ramadan Sarbahaka Nii Kwashiebu, Joseph Shaibu Dodoo, and Theophilus Nii Amu Kwadjan — were reportedly killed, while several others, including Frederick Lartey (also known as Nii Obrafour), Samuel Adjei, and Nathaniel Doku, sustained injuries. Some of the injured are receiving treatment at Ridge and Korle-Bu Teaching Hospitals, while others have been discharged.

During the arrests, police recovered a locally made pistol and a machete from Christian, and 18 empty cartridges from Newton’s residence.
