Accra, Ghana – Mr. Bright Essilfie Kumi has argued that the government’s much-publicised 24-hour economy initiative should be viewed as a job placement programme rather than a policy.
Speaking during an interview on Kasapa FM in Accra, Mr. Essilfie Kumi maintained that if the 24-hour economy were truly being implemented as a policy, key public institutions such as the Tema Port, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), and other government agencies would already be operating around the clock.
According to him, the absence of full 24-hour operations across these major institutions demonstrates that the initiative has not yet been implemented as a comprehensive national policy.
Mr. Essilfie Kumi contended that the programme currently focuses more on creating employment opportunities than introducing a nationwide policy that compels institutions to operate on a continuous basis.
He further argued that Ghana’s lack of a National Development Plan is one of the reasons successive governments struggle to sustain long-term development initiatives. According to him, the absence of such a framework is contributing to the failure of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to effectively implement its programmes and deliver on its development agenda.
His comments add to the ongoing national debate over the implementation of the government’s 24-hour economy initiative and the need for long-term national planning to ensure policy continuity and sustainable development.
