A fire outbreak around 9:00 am on August 16 has destroyed three households near the Cape Coast station in Takoradi, leaving properties worth hundreds of thousands of Ghana cedis in ashes.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known, though officials of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) say investigations are ongoing. Despite the quick arrival of firefighters with two fire tenders, very little could be saved.

Several victims have been left devastated. Ekow Ocran, who lost everything in his apartment, recalled how the fire started in a nearby wooden structure.

“I saw some kids running towards my end on the street. They told me fire has engulfed a wooden structure in the neighbourhood.

We rushed to the scene and attempted to control the fire while others tried to reach the Fire Service.

“The fire on the wooden structure was running wild, so there was little we could do. Fortunately, the fire service arrived,” he narrated.

Another victim, Daniel Sackey Dadzie, said all his household items, including his television, bed, refrigerator and furniture were destroyed.

For Kwame Assiful, only a handful of coins could be saved, as his cash and valuables in a treasury box were all burnt.

“I managed to salvage some belongings such as utensil, clothing and this money. I cannot tell how much money I have lost to the fire,” he lamented.

DO3 Emmanuel Bonney, Public Relations Officer of GNFS in the Western Region, confirmed that investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.
